![]() ![]() I picked what I think is the best, but it’s weighted towards the high end so you’ll need to play a lot with the low and middle on your equalizer to dial it in just right. Unfortunately, there aren’t a lot of great options for recordings of this one. (I’ve reviewed 5/24/95 and 5/26/95 if you have any interest in 1995 Dead). The Dead must have enjoyed this place, because after playing another show here tomorrow night, they returned for three of their better 1995 shows the following spring. The vocals, as usual for this era, contribute to the mournful atmosphere, but it’s all for the better in this case. Whatever energy Jerry was soaking up during the previous two hours comes pouring out in a string of slightly sloppy yet ultimately delicate playing that will probably slay you if your mind is in the right place. ![]() Which probably was what distracted Bob Weir into blowing the first part of I Need a Miracle, right? Right.īut the best comes right at the end, with a pretty amazing turn at Morning Dew. Please remember that in the later years, Drums / Space could be a highlight of the night, and today the sonic explorations during Space ring very true. This leads us into a fairly straightforward Terrapin Station and then some rudimentary jamming into Drums / Space. This is followed by a sparse take on Corrina, one of the few relatively good new songs the band was pursuing around this time. Fire on the Mountain is really the good part here – the vamping pulse of this tune seems to push Jerry along and he produces some good work. The second set is much more well-rounded, with a very solid attempt at Scarlet Begonias>Fire on the Mountain to start. Everything else in the first set is fun rock n’ roll. The only long-form song in the short first set is Bird Song, and it’s pretty messy. But the rest of the band sounds like they are enjoying themselves on the short songs, especially Vince, who is in good form. (I’ll get to his high point towards the end). His playing is pretty under the radar for most of the night, whether by design or circumstance. Unfortunately, Jerry, per usual, is the weak link here. But I know that it sounds like the Dead at least tried to put up a fight here tonight. So I’m not sure what the scene must have been like when the carnival landed smack dab in the middle of Rock City USA. ![]()
